Is Nano Banana 2.1 free? The limits in Gemini, AI Studio and the API
By GetStepSnap · Checked against Google's own pages on October 8, 2026
Not on a free Gemini account. You can still make images there without paying, but from October 9, 2026 free accounts only get the Flash-Lite model, which draws them with Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Google's help pages don't mention 2.1 for the app at all. Through Google's API and AI Studio, 2.1 has no free tier.
A lot of the "free limit" guides out there were written for Nano Banana 2 and quote per-day numbers that Google's help pages don't list. Everything below comes from Google's own help and price pages, which we read line by line on October 8, 2026.
The short answer
| Where | Image model | Free? | How much | Biggest download |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini app, no plan | Nano Banana 2 Lite (from October 9) | Yes | No number published. Refills every 5 hours, with a weekly cap | 1K |
| Gemini app, Google AI Plus | Nano Banana 2 | Paid plan | 2× the free limit | 2K |
| Gemini app, Google AI Pro or Ultra | Nano Banana 2, and Nano Banana Pro to redo an image | Paid plan | 4× the free limit with Pro; 20× or 80× with Ultra | 2K |
| Google AI Studio | Nano Banana 2.1 | Free to open; images need a paid key | Billed per image, like the API | Up to 4K |
| Gemini API | Nano Banana 2.1 | No free tier | $0.0336 per 1K image on Standard, half on Batch, plus input and thinking | Up to 4K |
| GetStepSnap | Nano Banana 2.1 | First 1K image | 100 credits for $9.90, no subscription | 4K (3 credits) |
Google changes these limits often. Each row comes from one of Google's pages listed at the end.
In the Gemini app: free images, but not 2.1
Image generation is on every Gemini account, the free one included, wherever Gemini is available. You need to be 13 to make images and 18 to edit photos. Which Nano Banana draws them depends on the Gemini model you're on: Flash-Lite uses Nano Banana 2 Lite, which Google describes as built for speed and not for several reference images or repeated edits; Flash and Pro use Nano Banana 2; and paid plans can redo an image with Nano Banana Pro.
Here's the catch. Starting October 9, 2026, accounts without a Google AI plan only get Flash-Lite, so a free account makes its images with the Lite model. Google AI Plus adds Flash, and Pro and Ultra add Pro.
What about 2.1 itself? Google DeepMind's model card lists the Gemini app as one of the places 2.1 ships, but on October 8 the Gemini help pages still named only Nano Banana 2, 2 Lite and Pro. Either way, from October 9 a free account is on Flash-Lite, and Google's help says Flash-Lite images come from Nano Banana 2 Lite.
How much you can make
Google doesn't publish a number. Since May 17, 2026 (July 24 for users under 18), Gemini's limits depend on how much computing your requests take. They refill every five hours until you reach a weekly cap, and images count as a premium feature that uses the limit up faster. Google's image help also mentions a daily quota of Nano Banana 2 images, again without a number.
Paid plans raise the limits: twice the free amount with Google AI Plus, four times with Pro, and 5 or 20 times Pro's limit with Ultra, depending on the subscription. That works out to 20 or 80 times the free amount.
Free downloads stop at 1K, about one megapixel. A Google AI plan raises that to 2K. The app doesn't offer 4K downloads on any plan.
In AI Studio and the API: no free 2.1 images
Google's API price page lists the free tier for Nano Banana 2.1 as "Not available", the same as for Nano Banana 2 and Pro. Every image is billed: $0.0336 for the image itself at 1K on the Standard tier, half that on Batch. Our Nano Banana 2.1 pricing guide has the full breakdown.
AI Studio is the confusing one. Google says AI Studio is free to use unless you link a paid API key. For Nano Banana 2, though, it said plainly that a paid key is required to use the model there, and 2.1 has no free tier to fall back on. Getting a paid key means linking a billing account and prepaying at least $5.
Out of free images? Your options
- Wait. Gemini's limits refill every five hours, until the weekly cap. On a free account the images still come from Nano Banana 2 Lite.
- Subscribe to a Google AI plan: Nano Banana 2 instead of the Lite model, 2K downloads, and 2 to 80 times the free limit, depending on the plan.
- Use the API if you write code. It's the cheapest per image, but you set up billing and prepay $5 first.
- Use GetStepSnap. Sign in with Google and your first 1K image with 2.1 is free. After that, 100 credits cost $9.90 plus local tax, with no subscription. 1K and 2K take 1 credit, 4K takes 3.
Here's what we actually think: if you make a few quick images a week, the free Gemini plan is fine, and you shouldn't pay anyone, us included. Paying starts to make sense when you want the full model instead of the Lite one, a 4K file, or more images than the free limit allows halfway through a project.
About "unlimited free"
Google charges for every 2.1 image made through its API. Its lowest public price is $0.0168, the image output of one 1K picture on the Batch tier, and the Standard tier is twice that. So when a site promises unlimited free 2.1 images, read the fine print. Ours is on the pricing page.
Questions
Is Nano Banana 2.1 free?
Not on a free Gemini account. From October 9, 2026, accounts without a Google AI plan only get the Flash-Lite model, which makes images with Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Google's help pages name Nano Banana 2, not 2.1, for the app. The Gemini API has no free tier for 2.1 either. On GetStepSnap your first 1K image with 2.1 is free, then 100 credits cost $9.90.
Which Nano Banana model does a free Gemini account use?
From October 9, 2026, Nano Banana 2 Lite. Free accounts only get Flash-Lite, and Google says Flash-Lite makes images with Nano Banana 2 Lite, a fast model that isn't built for several reference images or repeated edits. Flash and Pro, on paid plans, use Nano Banana 2.
How many free Nano Banana images can I make per day in Gemini?
Google doesn't give a number. Since May 17, 2026, Gemini's limits depend on how much computing your requests take: they refill every five hours up to a weekly cap, and images use them up faster than chat. Google's image help also mentions a daily quota of Nano Banana 2 images, without a number.
When does the Gemini image limit reset?
Every five hours, until you reach the weekly limit. Google moved to this on May 17, 2026 for adults and on July 24, 2026 for users under 18.
How much more do paid Gemini plans get?
Google AI Plus gets twice the free limit and Pro four times. Ultra gets 5 or 20 times Pro's limit, depending on the subscription, which works out to 20 or 80 times the free amount.
Is there a free Nano Banana 2.1 API?
No. Google's Gemini API price page lists the free tier for gemini-nano-banana-2.1 as not available. Paid access means linking a billing account and prepaying at least $5.
Can I use Nano Banana 2.1 for free in Google AI Studio?
AI Studio is free to open, but generating images there needs a paid API key. Google said so for Nano Banana 2, and 2.1 has no free API tier either.
What size are free Gemini images?
Downloads are 1K without a Google AI plan and 2K with one. For 4K you need the API or a tool built on it, like ours.
Do I need to sign up to try it on GetStepSnap?
You sign in with Google, nothing else. That's how we keep the free image to one per person.
