Before"Happy Birthday" spelled right in neon, the rose wall, the balloons and a sequined dress. Our first try put the sign behind her, and her head hid the last letters; "above their head" fixed it.
Your own image will show up here.
We started from two everyday snapshots made with the model, so no real person appears here, and gave each a birthday with one sentence. Every photo is the first result for the prompt under it, at 1K; two prompts got a fix after a first try, and their notes say what went wrong. The small picture is the photo we started from; "Use this prompt" puts the prompt in the tool above.
Birthday photoshoot ideas for the studio
Backdrops you'd pay a studio to build: a wall of roses with a neon sign, or black and gold.

Neon sign and a wall of roses
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A glamorous birthday photoshoot: they stand in front of a wall of pink and white roses, under a glowing neon sign above their head that says "Happy Birthday", in a sparkly party outfit, with a garland of pink, white and gold balloons around them. Soft, flattering studio light, a polished portrait.

Black and gold
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A luxury birthday portrait: they wear a black suit and stand beside a champagne tower, with a garland of black and gold balloons and gold confetti on a dark backdrop. Dramatic studio light, an elegant, magazine-style photo.
A champagne tower, black and gold balloons and confetti, and a tuxedo with a bow tie where we asked for a plain black suit. His face and hair match the snapshot.
Candid birthday photos
The kind a friend takes: a surprise in the morning, a party in a living room, a night out.

A room full of balloons
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A birthday morning surprise: they sit on a bed in a bedroom filled with pastel balloons, with ribbons hanging down from the balloons on the ceiling, laughing, in soft pajamas. Bright morning light from the window, a real candid photo.
Balloons on the ceiling with their ribbons hanging down, more across the floor, and her laughing in pajamas. The room came out a little messy, which is what makes it look like a real morning.

A 90s party, on film
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A 1990s birthday party snapshot: they wear a paper party hat and blow a party horn at a table with a homemade cake, streamers and friends around them, taken with a cheap point-and-shoot camera with direct flash. Slightly faded film colors and grain. No brand names or logos anywhere.
Party hat, party horn, a homemade cake and friends clapping, in the hard flash and faded color of a cheap film camera. Our first try put soda cans with a brand-like logo on the table, so we added the last sentence and ran it again.

Rooftop sparkler
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A birthday night out: they hold up a slice of cake with a lit sparkler candle on a rooftop terrace, smiling, with blurred city lights behind them. Evening light and warm bokeh, a candid photo.
A slice of chocolate cake with a sparkler, a rooftop, the city lit up behind him and a real laugh. The most candid of the seven.
A birthday out: a picnic or a diner
Two places to take the birthday person without leaving the house.

Golden hour picnic
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. An outdoor birthday picnic at golden hour: they sit on a linen blanket in a meadow of wildflowers next to a small white cake with lit candles, with a few balloons tied to a picnic basket. Warm, low sunlight and a soft background, a natural lifestyle photo.
Wildflowers, a small cake with lit candles, balloons on the basket and low golden light. She sits small in the frame, so this one is about the scene more than the face.

Retro diner
Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A birthday in a retro American diner: they sit in a red vinyl booth with a chocolate milkshake and a slice of birthday cake with one lit candle on the table, chrome and neon lights behind them. Bright and colorful, a fun photo.
Red booth, chocolate milkshake, a slice of cake with one candle and neon DINER and OPEN signs. It threw in a jukebox, a flag in the window and a party hat on the table.
How to make an AI birthday photo
- Upload one clear photo. The face in good light and not too small. If it's a group, use a photo with everyone already in it.
- Describe the birthday in one sentence. Where they are, what they're doing, the props and the light. Every prompt on this page has the same shape:Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same. A birthday [photoshoot, party snapshot or night out]: they [where they are and what they're doing], [the props: balloons, a cake, a sign]. [The light], [the kind of photo].
- Words go in quotes, with a place to sit. "A neon sign above their head that says 'Happy 30th, Mia'" works better than words floating somewhere in the scene. Keep them short.
- Pick the shape and the size. 4:5 for a feed post, 9:16 for a story. 1K (1 credit) looks fine on a phone; take 2K (2 credits) if you'll crop or print it.
Milestone birthdays: 18, 21, 30, 40, 50
For a big number, ask for it as gold number balloons. Our AI birthday card guide has a studio photo with a gold "3" and "0" that came out as asked; change the digits to any age, or put the number on the neon sign instead.
Captions for birthday photos
Short ones read best under a photo. A few to start from:
- Another lap around the sun
- Same face, one year better
- Cake first, questions later
- Birthday mode: on
- Making this year count
- Officially one candle more
A card, a pet or a whole photoshoot
To send a greeting rather than post a photo, the card guide makes cards with the name spelled right, and has a dog's birthday party in a party hat. For portraits in other looks from the same snapshot, from a magazine cover to film, see the AI photoshoot guide.
What it costs
There's no free image: every birthday photo is paid with credits. One takes 1 credit at 1K, 2 at 2K and 3 at 4K (one more with 3 or 4 photos), and packs cost $4.90 for 20 credits or $9.90 for 70, with no subscription. Ours took 17 to 20 seconds each at 1K.
AI birthday photo FAQ
How do I make an AI birthday photo?
Upload a clear photo of the birthday person, then say in one sentence where they are and what's around them, after a line that keeps the face. Each of the seven photos on this page came from one sentence like that.
Is there a free AI birthday photo generator?
Not here: every photo is paid with credits. One takes 1 credit at 1K, 2 at 2K and 3 at 4K (one more with 3 or 4 photos), and packs cost $4.90 for 20 credits or $9.90 for 70. It runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install.
Will it still look like me?
In our seven, the faces match the snapshots we started from: same hair, same smile. Every prompt starts with "Use the person in this photo and keep their face exactly the same." The further the face sits from the camera, as in the picnic, the less of it there is to check, so compare the result with your photo.
Can it write "Happy Birthday" or a name on the photo?
Yes. Put a few words in quotes and say where they go: on a neon sign, a banner or the cake. Our neon sign spelled "Happy Birthday" right. Say where the words sit, though: on the first try the sign was behind her head, and the head hid the end of the word.
Can I put friends or family from other photos into my birthday photo?
No. We don't put people from separate photos into one picture (see our Acceptable Use Policy). Start from one photo with everyone already in it.
What size should I pick for Instagram?
Pick 4:5 in the shape setting for a feed post and 9:16 for a story; our seven are 3:4, a little taller. 1K (1 credit) looks fine on a phone; take 2K (2 credits) if you'll crop or print it.
What happens to the photos I upload?
We store them so the model can read them and your results stay in your account, and use them for nothing else. To have them deleted, email support@getstepsnap.com.
